Bumper potato harvest now a bane of hoarders

The last year’s bummer harvest of potato has turned out to be a burden for farmers and hoarders who are now forced to sell the popular vegetable at 30 per cent lower prices than storage costs.
With huge stockpile of potato in cold storages, they now want the government to take up promotional campaigns to boost potato consumption and encourage further cultivation of the tuber.
“It is a great debacle for me as I have lost Tk 30,000 by storing potatoes worth Tk one lakh,” said Aminul Islam, a farmer in the northern potato growing district of Joipurhat.
