The river Buriganga is about to die.

Leather industry in Bangladesh is one of the most profitable and significantly important sectors no doubt. It is the fourth largest foreign exchange earner of the country contributing about six per cent of total export earnings. At the first sight, it may be viewed as one of the most promising and contributing sectors in the economy. The economic benefit produced by the tannery industry to the economy as well to our society can be measured, but the damage made by this industry to the environment as well as to the society cannot be measured by any scale.

Sharonkhola,Bagerhat is a severely Cyclone SIDR,2007 affected area of the country. An indigenous community named Cobbler is living at the river side of the Bhaloshor River which became very furious during the time of cyclone. As they are lower cast people so normally general people don’t come to them and mix with them. They were seriously affected by the cyclone SIDR but they don’t got any house from any donor because they have no land for their own. Each and every family is a very low income family. Their husbands are repair shows which are reducing day by day. Female members of the family are trying to earn some money by sewing warm cloths and doing work outside. Although their income is small but they were happy with their small income.

Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh: Farmers had begun to thresh their paddy in Nachol by mid-May. The harvest, they said was good and the dry weather had in fact been helpful for the boro paddy. But the dry midday heat was stifling and unlike the humid weather typical of most of the other areas of Bangladesh in general. The dry weather had persisted for long as many a farmer agreed. The land is all hard now and without a few days of rain we will not be able to plant anyway, says Naresh Mardi, , a 60 years old farmer from Benipur, Nachol, Chapainawabganj and also a member of an ethnic minority group. He adds laughingly, And if it rained the boro harvest might not have been this good. Either way it will be bad. But now that we have cut the paddy from the fields, we will be hoping for some rain soon.
