Mymensingh, Bangladesh: ‘DUE to irregular rainfall every year and random flood growing rice has become a big risk, more and more farmers are giving up their lands to industrialists building mostly spinning mills and other industries,’ says Afazuddin Akhand, a 70 years old Farmer from Bhoradoba of Mymensingh.

It is not much of a problem for farmers who own large amounts of land, he says, ‘But small farmers like me have small land holdings and if the crop fails, we are ruined in one harvest’.

Cold paralyses life in Jhenidah

Jhenidah, Bangladesh:  Biting cold along with chilly air and dense fog has paralysed the normal lives of the 16 lakh people of the district for the last few days.

Although winter set in some days ago, the bite of severe cold has really begun now.

With the bone jerking cold along with chilly air and dense fog from early night to midday has already paralysed the lives of the people of the district.

Sun is visible at noon. But has no impression on cold. It is now a normal scene on the roads that people are shivering in the cold.

Nine old persons die of cold in the last four days in three affected unions

Khulna, Bangladesh: Cold is now another name of ‘cruelty’ to the severely Aila-affected people of Dacope upazila in Khulna district of Bangladesh, observed the leader of the Nagarik Parishad there, Dr Achintya Kumar Biswas. He said that that a total of 50,000 out of 60,000 affected people have been living on the sides of the roads that go through the beels (swamps) or by the river banks.

Narsingdi slum people cry for warm clothes

Narsingdi, Bangladesh: The poor people, particularly the slum dwellers in Narsingdi town of Bangladesh, are crying for warm clothes to protect themselves from the biting cold sweeping over the country for around a week.

During a visit Tuesday night, it was found that people residing in different slums were sitting close to each other inside their respective houses to get some respite from the cold.

Our New Age correspondent visited the slums at Baniyachal, Kawriapara, Satirpara, Chowala, Rangamatia and Bowakur in the town and saw the hapless people suffering from the chill.
